Preface
When I read back through the manuscript of this book, I gasp! How could any man live up to the standards set forth here? My answer. Don't even try. Impossible! But with God all things are possible.
The idea of this book is that we can't, God can, so let us let Him--let us allow Him to do for us what He has set out to do anyway: call forth the dad within the man.
I have simply tried to paint what I believe is a God-given picture of what the dad looks like. All that any of us can do is look at this picture and say, "Wow! I want that"; then ask God to put us into that picture by putting that picture into us.
Faithfully and prayerfully read the ideas in this book and allow the Holy Spirit to convict you where you need to be convicted, change you where you need to be changed, encourage you when you need to be encouraged, and strengthen you when you need to be strengthened.
Small study group meetings
You can maximize the benefits from this study by using it in a Sunday School class, Bible study group, or an accountability group. Processing questions are provided at the end of each chapter.
Take time in your first session together to establish rules and guidelines for the meeting. The most important rule is confidentiality. Each group member must have the assurance that anything said will not be repeated outside of the meeting. Agree to be open and honest with one another. Accept one another unconditionally. Build each other up and affirm positive actions, decisions, and changes. Each person is to be responsible for his own thoughts, feelings, actions, decisions, and issues. No one person is expected to be a counselor but all are to be good listeners. Stay focused on the subject. Be regular and punctual in attendance. Set other behavioral and housekeeping policies that seem necessary and appropriate.
Allocate your time for the things you want to accomplish during each group meeting and stick to it. Meetings that go overtime discourage attendance.
During the week prior to each meeting, read a chapter of this book and, using a notebook, answer the questions for that chapter.
Suggested agenda for group meetings
Take an allotted amount of time to generally discuss the features that stood out the most in the chapter under study for the week. Share your answers to these questions: What ideas had the greatest impact upon you? What did you not understand? How did the contents of the chapter relate personally to your experiences?
Next, briefly share your answers to the questions for each chapter. Be open to other good questions that are raised.
Next, do any group exercises that are called for.
Finally, take prayer requests. Limit these to the issues being dealt with and being held up for accountability.
Pray for one another as you are led by the Holy Spirit and/or guided by the scriptures.
Pray privately for one another during the week.
Whether you are personally reading this book or studying it together with others, I appeal to you to stay open to what the Holy Spirit wants to do in your life. Invite Him to give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation knowledge each time you pick up this book to read.
