My daughter came home one day this week talking about how one of her teachers was speaking to the class about Promise Rings. Apparently, this was presented as being a good thing and the teacher referenced stars like the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus who were wearing them.
Now, I won't pick on those entertainers, but just look at their lives. The Jonas Brother sing songs filled with sexual innuendo targeting young pre-teens and teenage girls, and we are supposed to believe this "promise ring" has some meaning? Miley Cyrus has been posing half-naked and recently danced on a stripper pole at the Nick Teen awards, and this is a symbol of chastity?
I stated to my daughter, "Baby, if you want to remain pure and chaste before the Lord, all you have to do is remain pure and chaste before the Lord. God doesn't care about rings, He is looking at your heart."
While I am sure that the teacher meant well, this young children are not stupid. They can see the hypocrisy between the outward presentation and the inner life style.
It is sad that the best my children's "Christian" school has to offer these children is a gravitation towards being religious. To have symbols of faith in Christ that have no substance. Live like a whore, but as long as you have the promise ring, you are a role model.
I really don't mean to make an example out of that school, the teacher, or these entertainers. It is just interesting how the world pushes you to religion versus relationship with God...even from an early age. That is the best they can offer.
One of the hardest hells one can fight out of is a religious mindset, where one never really gets to know God because you are too busy performing for Him.
