Works

I was thinking about works just now. Work in this ministry, that group, that committee, that board, that program, etc.
I remember a time quite a few years ago when I was in such pain. I was fornicating and hating myself everyday for it but unable to break away. My mother passed away. I was frustrated with my job. I was hurting. I cried inside everyday because I couldn't find any peace or comfort. I wanted God...so I went to church.
I went to the altar. What is the first thing the Pastor did after the service. He and his wife called me into his study and asked me to be the youth leader.
I needed time to be cleansed and they wanted me to work. I look back now and I know that was NOT God that told them to ask me that. It was their own need for a person to fill that slot.
I say all this to say that sometimes people can make you feel guilty for not "working" in the church...but maybe you need time to learn the scripture and learn to hear God for yourself and when you start "working" you end up doing so much activity that you begin to think that is what keeps you saved.
I don't think there is anything wrong with working but I guess we should let God lead us as to what to do and when to do it instead of feeling pressured because surely if the Pastor asks you to do it he must have heard from God.....
Just something that was on my mind today.

I agree. The "work" we might do for God is not half as important as the work He is doing in us. That must be our first priority. If we put that first, then we will know that the work He gives us is in line with His will and with what He has placed within us to share with others. Excessive focus on our "works" can often become a cover or replacement for letting Him complete His perfect work in us. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Matthew 7:21-23
For this is the will of God, even your sanctification... I Thessalonians 4:3a
