I came across a website while I was searching Google for "What does the Bible say about music." www.getchristiananswers.com/articles/what-does-bible-say-about-music (the Website). My question is to The Latter Day Ministry, but, also to whomever could shine some light on the topic. Question? As I was reading the article, this particular statement stood out to me. "Music should not be something to divide Bible Christians. Music is considered one of the non-essentials of the Christian faith. In other words, it has nothing to do with your salvation." So, how do you feel about that statement? I'm really not sure how I feel about it. But personally I'm leading toward this statement being false for several reason. But, that's just me, and, I would like some honest opinions from you (LDM), and, from other people. I also don't see anywhere in the Bible where it talks about music being or not being an essential or non-essential to Christian faith, or to salvation in the matter. I'm still doing my research and asking God for answers. Also what does music has to do with? I know it's used in various parts of the Bible for different situations. But really, what is supposed to be the soul purpose of music (Is it only for worshiping GOD?) and do the types of instruments and the way the are played have any significance? Does music play any part in our spiritual growth and relationship toward and with GOD? -Estes™

Hi Estes,
I would have to say that I do not agree, although I understand perhaps why they would say that.
Will God send someone to Hell because of the music they listen to? I would say no. So, in that sense it is a non-essential for salvation.
However, can music defile and promote idol worship when done in the wrong spirit? Absolutely.
Take a look at the following:
"Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon.
Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the princes, the governors, and the captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.
Then the princes, the governors, and captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, were gathered together unto the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up.
Then an herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, O people, nations, and languages, That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up: And whoso falleth not down and worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace." Daniel 3:1-6
Music was an integral part to facilitating the worship of the idol created in Daniel 3. It was actually the music which got the people on one accord to worship the idol.
So, not all music is Godly and some is specifically unGodly. Any practice can become divisive in God's Body if in fact it is ushering in idolatry or perversion.
Remember as well that Scripture seems to indicate that Lucifer was a musical creature:
"Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created." Ezekiel 28:13
As such, it is not implausible that satan would attempt to use music to deflect worship from God to himself.
I think you ask an excellent question, "What is the purpose of music?"
I believe the purpose of music is to usher in the presence of the Lord. Psalms is a perfect example of this. It specifically addresses music/song and how these are used in relation to the Lord.
There is a spiritual component to all music. The question is, what spirit is being promoted in the music we choose to listen to?

I'm glad we both agree on not agreeing to that. I thought the same thing.

Take a look at this video series which essentially addresses that music is not neutral and only good or bad based on the lyrics. Music itself can be either good or bad simply by its style. Further, it examines what music is in God's eyes, which is an important understanding to have. thelatterdays.blogspot.com/2010/02/christs-music-or-satans-music.html

This is interesting.
And the other thing we must consider is that Satan is interested in taking our minds slowly, little by little. One song today plants a seed. Another song tomorrow plants a seed. Most Christians think secular music or most gospel music is harmless because they don't understand the spiritual seeds that are planted when we allow this music into our homes and cars.
And we don't want to let go of the world. We would rather hold on to the love song and says it's harmless because it's not a rap song with profanity. But what we don't believe or want to believe is that it's not just the lyrics.

Very true Newstart. We need to be made new in Him in all things and seek Him in all things.

If any of you haven't listened to Christ Our Life, I recommend listening to them and meditating on the words. Very simple guitar/piano and voice. They just put out another album, "Christ Our Life" www.christourlife.ca/christ_our_life_cd.html Their older one is "Living Sacrifice." Speed the day
