The doctrine of election teaches that God chooses you and you didn't choose Christ thus the ones who are chosen by God are the elect ones. If this is true what is the purpose of altar calls and telling people to come and accept Jesus in their hearts?
This doctrine goes hand in hand with once saved always saved as it states that if one was truly born again he would not turn away from God and if he did that just means he was never truly born again.
Can anyone shed some understanding on this?

Chosen One, You must be looking over my shoulder. ;D
As we speak, I am working on a blog series about the Once Saved Always Saved doctrine. I hope to have it completed and published by this weekend.
Long story short, the Scriptures say that whom God foreknew He predestined. So, God pre-determines based on how He knows we will respond. God is not subject to time. He is in the past, present, and future all at the same time. So He already knows the beginning from the end.
He sets His plan in motion - using everything according to His purposes - based on how He knows we will respond. For example, He knew Judas Iscariot would betray Him, and that is why Judas was chosen as one of the 12.
Once the current series is posted, I'll open up a topic discussion so we can further evaluate the Scriptures and discuss what we each see in the area.
I understand that there are varying understandings here, and only wish to document how I see it in order to further discussion and hopefully edify others in the faith - even if that is just to encourage others into more study.
God Bless! Mia

;D Yeah you are right, first the Cindy Trimm thing and now OSAS. I just read the first two posts on OSAS and I can already see that what was shared is based on sound doctrine. I had an issue with OSAS because it just didn't line up with scripture. However I also had an issue with election because I didn't have understanding of what it was about.....no one taught me about it and even though I saw it when I read the Word, I still was without understanding. My question was always if God chooses us then that means that some people are not chosen and if some are not chosen then what's the purpose in preaching or spreading the gospel to some people because they will never be enlightened. This discouraged me. However after praying about it I realized that God is the Creator and He knows everything, he sees the hearts of man and knows their end. I've realized that spreading the gospel isn't in vain because we don't know who the elect are and therefore the gospel must be preached and the truth is what will set the captives free. Thanks for taking the time to do this. I also added you on facebook last night .......I'm the one with the "Age ain't nothing but a number" status......... Just so you know who you are talking to. Stay blessed and keep on sharing the truth! I'm encouraged!

Your article "Predestined by God" is excellent!
Regarding our understanding of "predestination" it is important to stick with what scripture actually says about it and not get misled by man's theology. Who does scripture say is "predestined" and for what are they "predestined".
There is a tendency in some camps to add to what scripture says.
The bible references to the matter tell us that; 1) Jesus death was predestined 2) believers are predestined to be conformed to Jesus image and 3) believers are predestined for adoption as sons.
No where does scripture speak about inidviduals being predestined for salvation.
Also regarding "election", the elect are those who are IN HIM (Christ) and we are included in Him when we hear and believe the gospel. (see Eph 1).
It should be noted that both predestination and election (two similar but different issues) are linked to God's foreknowledge.

I agree Tim about what Scripture says about predestination! Too many Scriptural concepts have been hijacked (for lack of a better word) and twisted to mean something Scripture never says in order to support the doctrines of men.
We must always go back to the source and ask God to give us His understanding by the power of His Spirit so that we are not caught up in things that may even sound right, but are not Scriptural. May God continue to open our eyes and draw us closer to Him!
