On a purely surface level, these are secret, exclusive organizations. Secret meaning that things are hidden or done in darkness and exclusive meaning it is not open to all, but only its initiated members. Christ does nothing in secret and He says that all things which are hidden shall be brought to the light. Neither is Christianity exclusive, but is open to all who will place faith in jesus. Consider this as well. What does it mean to be initiated? An initiation is the ceremonies or rituals of admission. A ritual is an established or prescribed procedure for a religious or other rite. Even those who have been initiated will tell you that there is a spiritual overtone to joining one of these organizations. All Greek organizations incorporate idolatrous practices into their rituals. There are vows and allegiances done to false gods/goddesses and/or religions. Further, there are strict parallels between the rites in those organizations and the rites in Freemasonry. Based on my initial research, the Black Greek organizations seem to have their origins in an organization called the Boule ( www.sigmapiphi.org/home/). The Boule is alleged to have been formed as an offshoot of the Skull and Bones organization. In other words, it is supposed to be the Black version of the Skull and Bones. I say that this is alleged because I am still researching this and this reflects what I have seen so far. Here is a video series where one woman speaks of why she left her sorority. As a Haitian by nationality, she was surprised by how similar the sorority rituals were to the voodoo and witchcraft she had seen growing up. Wow! I haven't looked at the videos yet but I did hear of something by Craig Lewis that discussed something similiar.
I'm a member of a Black Greek Letter organization and this is something I really have to pray on.
Please pray for me that God's will is done, because that is the most important thing to me.

I never joined one of these organizations, so I have no first-hand knowledge.
I know people who belong to these and what I have heard from others has been consistent (i.e., initiations involving vows to other gods/goddessess/religions, pagan spiritual ceremonies like "crossing the sands", enacting resurrection death/life type scenarios, etc.). While a few I know have left those affiliations, most just think it is not that serious.
Feel free to share anything you find out or what you feel God is leading you to do. I am sure your experience would be helpful to others.

I never joined either although I almost did. Thank God! I will pray for you Chicanella.
God can open your spiritual eyes so you can see the organization the way He sees it.

HI, I've been reading this blog for some while now but I never noticed the message board section until today. I always had a aversion to the idea of sorieties and fraternities - never quite knew why (Mainly the hazing aspects, I just couldn't see myself doing that just to get friends or to network) I so happened to see the youtube videos mentioned above for the first time earlier today! God is good! I'd urge you all to watch the entire series. I've been on a quest for truth and answers lately almost to the point of obsession. I am finding out something new each day.

Welcome Cristal!
I felt exactly as you describe. I never understood why I had to let somebody beat me down in order for them to call me "sister". To me, that whole part just made no sense. I guess it was God's hand on me giving me SOME sense, even before I knew Him. LOL
We each learn more about Jesus each day, so please don't hesitate to share your own personal revelations.
God Bless! Mia

I have not been able to view all of the videos. For some reason you tube will not buffer properly on my computer today..but none the less, this is a topic that is very concerning and alarming to me. I am a former member of a BGLO; I pledged in 2002 and dropped out by the end of 2003. In the beginning, I was very naive. I thought I would just make some new friends and party party party! I did not fully realize what I was opening my soul up to. The things that happened during our initiation ceremony were frightening to say the least. Sure I pledged with other "Christian" girls, but I seemed to be the only one bothered by the action of the old members, the ceremonies that were held, and the behavior of our chapter after we crossed. I could tell you so many stories I am not even sure where to start. The bottom line was this, it was definitely a spiritual experience. There are things that go on during those ceremonies and rituals that are deeply disturbing. Imagine you in all black, and the older member wearing all white; they are standing around you holding candles and chanting.... does that seem Godly to you?! By the grace of God, and I do mean the Grace of God, I fainted during our initiation ceremony. While I participated in some activities, during the most disturbing parts, I was sipping water and being fanned and observing what my "sisters" were taking part in. Signing names into an eternal book, reciting pledges of allegiance to an organization where during the pledge you LITERALLY state "I greet thee", as if you were talking to an actual being. What God allowed me to realize is that we were talking to an actual being, and that it WAS in fact a form of idolatry. As far as the physical abuse or hazing is concerned (someone mentioned it earlier), it's a process. It is supposedly meant to break you down and build you back up as a _____ man or woman. (You can fill in the blank with the name of any organization). However until recently, I did not receive complete revelation on this process. Many people do not realize that it IS sinful because we are supposed to be transformed by the renewing of our minds and take on the mind of Christ...not the mind of whatever sorority or fraternity we are becoming a part of. The other point that I wanted to discuss is what happens after you "cross". We began participating in all types of community service activities, doing them in the name of the organization INSTEAD of in the name of Jesus. Then, meetings were held on Sundays at 12:30pm. I was fined $2 at every meeting for showing up late...even though I was late because I was coming from church. Then, at the beginning of every meeting we said the pledge, and at the end of every meeting we sang the song. (If I shared the words with you, you would be frightened.) I'll even take it a step further; you are taught that these are bonds that are formed for life; that once you are a _____ you are always a _______. At many of my "line sisters" weddings, everyone who is a member of the organization stands around the bride and sings the sorority song. They think it's sisterly, but I think its witchcraft, the circle symbolizing the "eternal" bond they have with each other and the sorority. (Men/Fraternities do it too) I once had someone become upset with me because when they asked me if I was a _____, I said no. I could go on and on forever but I will stop here. If anyone has any questions or comments or wants me to discuss anything in further detail, I would be more than happy to. This is one of those things that I KNOW that God has called me to do...to help break the chains that have people bound to these organizations. By sharing my testimony and the revelations that I have received, I help others become set free. P.S. If you REALLY want to know why pink and green became such a fad around 2002-2005 I can tell you EXACTLY why from first hand knowledge. Just let me know. I just didn't want to be even more long-winded than I already was

Hi Ashley! I appreciate your post in this matter. You seem to have a lot of inside knowledge and not just that revelation from God concerning BGLO. Many people have an inside knowledge of these organziations and continue on in them because they have NOT received a revelation from the Lord as to how this all plays into being a true man or woman of God.
I pray that your testimony delivers many young men and women who were naive as college students (and some even as adults) and that those on their way to college can hear the truth and make a wise and informed decision concerning these organizations.
I too almost pledged but there were just so many personal situations and situations with the organization that prevented me from doing so and for that I am truly grateful to God for. But if I would have had it my way I would have been a pledging son of biscuit...
Thanks again for sharing..

HI Ashley B. May,
I don't think there is any such thing as being long winded when you are speaking the truth. I never pledged, although I did entertain the idea. I got some of the inside scoop from my aunt who was the first in our family to pledge. She almost quit the line herself due to all of the pressure and stress before crossing over. However, once she crossed, she would share some info with me to help me in preparing to do so.
When you are part of college life, it can look so enticing. There is a bond that unites you with the others in your group. You have an exclusive set of colors used to promote your identity. You do good works and community service. You get recognition and respect from others, even networking after college. And you certainly get to have fun, step, and party. LOL But what is the substance behind it as you say? Is that even important?
I think it should be. I get lots of comments from people arguing with me about how the greek organizations are good, but nothing we have to pledge loyalty to in secret by re-enacting pagan mystical rituals is Godly.
I too appreciate you sharing your perspective and pleas feel free o post more as God leads.
God Bless!
